Cleveland, Ohio – A first-place individual finish and strong team performances highlighted the past weekend of action for the Cleveland State University fencing team as it competed across two days at Ohio State's French Field House.

In the OSU Open, junior Matthew Gebbett won the saber competition. It was the second straight open event in which he finished in first place.

Sophomore Adam Mack (men's foil) and junior Sarah Mok (women's foil) each posted third-place finishes in their respective events at the OSU Open.

The Vikings really performed well Sunday while competing in the OSU Duals, the first team-format competition of the season.

The CSU men went 5-1 against six opponents, often winning by comfortable margins. Cleveland State defeated Iowa (23-4), Michigan (19-8), Michigan State (21-6), Oakland (26-1) and Oberlin (25-2) over the course of the day. CSU's lone defeat came to host Ohio State, who finished second at last year's NCAA Championships, as the Buckeyes claimed a 20-7 victory. CSU dropped the epee category by a slim, 5-4, margin to Ohio State, which was the closest the Buckeyes came to dropping a weapon category in the event.

The CSU women notched a 4-2 record against the same six programs. Cleveland State knocked off Iowa (18-9), Michigan State (17-10), Oakland (20-7) and Oberlin (20-7). Like the men's team, the women also fell to Ohio State (24-3), while the Vikings also lost to Michigan by a 17-10 margin.

Cleveland State will be right back in action this coming weekend as it competes in the Case Western Fall Open Saturday, Oct. 22.
