Strong Fencing Performance At Case Western Reserve Duals

From head coach James Fazekas:

"The Cleveland State University Men's and Women's Fencing Teams completed a very successful Dual Meet weekend at Case Western Reserve University. The men and women went head-to-head with Midwest Conference Rivals Oakland University, University of Toledo, University of Michigan, Oberlin College, Michigan State University, Bowling Green State University, Xavier University and host Case Western Reserve University.

The Men's team had an impressive outing winning 7 of the 8 matches, with the only loss on the day to U of M.

Saber man Matthew Gebbett racked up 25 wins of 26 bouts (25v-1d), with the only blemish on the day being a close loss to Michigan's #1 fencer. Matt is expected to perform at this high level building up to the Midwest Fencing Championships in 2016. In this same team match, the Men's Foil Team (Adam Mack, Alexander Hoirup and Joseph Del Guidice - all Freshmen) pulled out 5v-4d upset win against an experienced U of M Foil Team.

The Men's Epee Team (Captain Michael Schloemer, Paul Duchow, Logan Shoemaker and Logan Eskew) had a close loss of 4v-5d against the Michigan Epee Team. It was a tough loss, and one this talented Viking Epee Team is going to have to put into their book of hard-lessons-learned to better prepare them for the remainder of the season, and an expected re-match at the Midwest Conference Championships in March 2016.

The Women's Epee Team was lead by Captain Caitlin Thompson and Fatima Ayoubi. Unfortunately, team mate Simiola Babayode could not compete due to flu, and the team was handicapped with forfeiting 33% of their bouts to every opponent. Caitlin and Fatima pulled out a 5v-4d victory against Oakland, but it was much harder finding five victories against their other Midwest foes starting each match at 0v-3d. This was a hard day of work for our women and they are looking forward to Simiola's return to complete the season and challenge in the Conference Championships in March.

The bright light for CSU's Varsity Women was Sarah Mok who went undefeated on the day with a dominating performance of 21v - 0d. Sarah, as a Sophmore, is building up to a break-out year and is on course to be challenging for an NCAA at large selection for the National Championships later this year."
