The Cleveland State University Sports Medicine Staff is committed to providing the best care to all Viking student athletes. The Cleveland State University Sports Medicine program consists of four NATABOC certified staff athletic trainers, one intern, four affiliated team physicians, and many local allied health care providers and specialists.

Certified athletic trainers are educated and highly skilled allied health care professionals. In cooperation with physicians and other allied health care providers, certified athletic trainers function as members of the athletic health care team. Athletic trainers are required to maintain Continuing Education Requirements by their national certifying body (National Athletic Training Association Board of Certification) and the State of Ohio.

All Certified Athletic Trainers are competent in the following areas:

  • Pathology of Injuries and Illnesses
  • Assessment and Evaluation
  • Acute Care of Injury and Illness
  • Therapeutic Modalities
  • Health Care Administration
  • Nutritional Aspects of Injury and Illness
  • Professional Development and Responsibility

The sports medicine department is under the guidance of Dr. Susan Joy, sports health physician, and Dr. Tom Anderson, orthopedic surgeon, from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

Benefiting from the two of the finest athletic training rooms in Division athletics, Viking student athletes are cared for with muscle stimulators, ultrasound, whirlpools, and other state of the art rehabilitation equipment. The athletic training rooms are located at the Wolstein Center and the Woodling Gymnasium.

Cleveland State University Athletic Training Services is directed by head athletic trainer Jackie Wise, associate head athletic trainer Max Benton, assistant athletic trainer Richard Beninghof, assistant athletic trainer Michael Spriggs and two athletic training intern. The goals of the Cleveland State University Sports Medicine Staff are to prevent athletic injuries as much as possible through effective injury prevention programs and to return injured athletes to their previous competitive status in the safest and quickest manner.
