CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland State student-athletes posted their 27th straight semester surpassing a 3.00 cumulative grade point average for the spring 2020 semester, while also setting a new department record for a term grade point average.
The Vikings combined to record a 3.37 cumulative grade point average, which marks the fourth consecutive term Cleveland State student-athletes combined for above a 3.30 cumulative GPA and the sixth straight semester compiling above a 3.20 cumulative GPA.
The 330+ Cleveland State student-athletes also notched a new school record with a term GPA of 3.66 for the spring 2020 semester, topping the previous high of 3.313, which was set last semester in the fall of 2019.
"The late semester transition to remote delivery of classes presented unprecedented circumstances and Viking student-athletes more than stepped up to take on the challenge," said Cleveland State Director of Athletics Scott Garrett. "We are incredibly proud to share our continued success in the classroom, with all 18 of our teams tallying a 3.00 GPA or better, while posting a new department record term GPA. Thank you to our coaches, academic support staff, and to the administration, faculty and staff of Cleveland State University for ensuring that Viking student-athletes had all of the support necessary to successfully wrap up their academic work this semester."
For the first time in school history, all 18 of Cleveland State's varsity programs posted a term GPA of at least a 3.00, led by women's soccer's department-high 3.89 GPA. Volleyball (3.88), men's tennis (3.87), women's golf (3.86), women's tennis (3.85) and women's swimming and diving (3.84) all saw team GPA's of 3.80 or better.
155 student-athletes were named to the Dean's List, while 46 Vikings were named to the President's List. To be named to the Dean's List, students must have at least a 3.25 GPA with a minimum of 12 graded credit hours, whereas the President's List requires minimums of a 3.90 GPA and 15 graded credits.
Additionally, 52 student-athletes that logged at least twelve graded credit hours, or completed the final courses required for their degree, earned a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Prior to the University's spring commencement, which was held virtually on Saturday, May 30, Cleveland State Athletics held a virtual graduation reception for 68 graduating student-athletes. The graduating Vikings were presented with their student-athlete stoles and enjoyed speeches from Cleveland State University President Harlan Sands, Director of Athletics Scott Garrett, lacrosse student-athlete and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee President Justin Conner, and keynote speaker Cleveland Cavaliers Assistant Coach Lindsay Gottlieb.
