A LOOK AT WHAT'S HAPPENING

MEN'S GOLF

  • The Vikings were selected to compete in the NCAA Columbus Regional, which will take place from May 14-16 at The Scarlet Course and hosted by Ohio State. It will be the fifth straight year that CSU will compete in regionals and the ninth in the last 13 seasons overall.
  • CSU earned the Horizon League's automatic bid by winning its fifth straight League title. The Vikings were led by junior Anton Krecic who finished second overall and senior Blake Prince who was fifth. The duo helped the Vikings to an 18-shot win over runner-up Oakland.
  • CSU also played in the NCAA regionals in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017.
  • This will be the second time CSU will compete at the Columbus Regional with the Vikings also playing the NCAA Regional at The Scarlet Course in 2008.

SOFTBALL

  • The Vikings closed the season over the weekend, finishing the year with a 15-34 record.
  • Senior Mel Woodard led the team with a .336 average and closed her career by hitting safely in six straight games. She was 12-for-22 (.545) with six runs, two doubles and a triple during the six-game hit streak.
  • Junior Riley Ries was named to the Academic All-Horizon League squad and finished the year hitting .333 with team-highs in home runs (6) and RBI (31).
  • Senior Kristin Catalano set the CSU career record with 70 career relief appearances.

MEN'S TENNIS

  • Cleveland State will make its sixth appearance in the NCAA Tournament this weekend, traveling to 15th seeded Michigan for a First Round contest on Saturday, May 12. Joining the Vikings at the Ann Arbor, Michigan site will be Notre Dame and Western Michigan, with the winners of the two First Round contests meeting in a Second Round match on Sunday, May 13.
  • The Vikings enter NCAA Tournament play on a six-match winstreak, including a pair of Horizon League Tournament victories which led the Vikings to their sixth #HLMTEN title in program history.
  • Entering play this weekend, junior Benjamin Slade ranks ninth on the CSU Singles Wins List with 60 career victories after becoming the 10th Viking all-time to reach the 60-win milestone with his win at No. 4 singles in the #HLMTEN Championship match.

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD

  • The Vikings wrapped up a successful outdoor season last weekend, finishing seventh at the 2018 Horizon League Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
  • Cleveland State recorded seven podium finishes, including a trio of top-three performances.
  • Hannah Gaskins was named the Field Events Co-Freshmen of the Year, after placing second in the Heptathlon with a score of 4285 and finishing eighth in the High Jump with a mark of 1.60.

WRESTLING

  • Josh Moore was named the head wrestling coach this past week.
  • Moore was the top assistant at CSU for the past three seasons and has 14 years of Division I coaching experience.
  • Moore was a two-time All-American for Penn State in his collegiate days.

VESPYS

  • The Department of Athletes and SAAC hosted the 6th Annual VESPYS on Wednesday night in the Student Center. The awards ceremony honors the achievements of CSU student-athletes from the season.
  • The following were voted as winners of 2017-18 VESPYS

    Freshman of the Year: Tyree Appleby, Men's Basketball
    Best Social Media Post: Men's Tennis Horizon League Championship Celebration
    Coach of the Year: Chuck Voss, Volleyball
    Community Service Award: Men's Lacrosse
    Best Game Face: Gabe Stark, Wrestling
    Best Individual Performance: Molly McNamara at Horizon League Swimming Championship
    Best Game: Women's Basketball Defeats Nationally-Ranked Green Bay
    Bleed Green/Viking Spring Award: MacJilton Lewis, Men's Swimming
    Best Sport Moment: Men's Basketball Horizon League Championship Run
    Female Athlete of the Year: Gina Kilner, Volleyball
    Male Athlete of the Year: Nico Mostardi, Men's Tennis
    Ms. Viking: Sophie Kelner, Women's Golf
    Mr. Viking: Kenny Carpenter, Men's Basketball

VIKING OF THE WEEK

Hannah Gaskins | Fr. | Women's Outdoor Track & Field
Gaskins was named the 2018 Horizon League Outdoor Field Events Co-Freshmen of the Year. She placed second in the Heptathlon with a score of 4,285 - including four top-two finishes in individual events and also finished eighth in the High Jump with a mark of 1.60.
