A LOOK AT WHAT'S HAPPENING

MEN'S BASKETBALL

  • Cleveland State (9-22, 6-12 HL) opens play in the Horizon League Championship as the No. 8 seed and will play No. 9 seed Youngstown State in a first round game on Friday (March 2) at 8:00 pm in Detroit.
  • The winner moves on to face top-seeded Northern Kentucky on Saturday (March 3) at 8:00 pm in a second round game.
  • CSU and YSU split two games this year with each winning on the others home court.
  • The Vikings won in Youngstown, 99-94, in double overtime in the regular season finale on Saturday as Bobby Word hit a career-high tying seven three-pointers and scored 25 points.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

  • Cleveland State (19-10, 11-7) will enter the 2018 Horizon League Tournament as the No. 6 seed, following one of its most successful regular season slates in recent history.
  • The Vikings will open #HLWBB Tournament play with a second round contest against No. 3 Wright State on Sunday, March 4, with the winner advancing to the semifinal on Monday, March 5.
  • Entering postseason play, the Vikings have reached the 19-win plateau for the sixth time under head coach Kate Peterson Abiad, and also recorded double-digit Horizon League regular season wins for the sixth time over the last 15 seasons.

FENCING

  • Cleveland State will take the upcoming weekend off before hosting the NCAA Midwest Regional March 10.
  • Freshman Declan Forth placed ninth in the men's saber competition at this past weekend's Midwest Fencing Conference Championships while senior Sarah Mok was ninth in the women's foil event.
  • The CSU women's foil team finished ninth while the men's saber team was 12th.

MEN'S GOLF

  • CSU opens the spring season at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday (Feb. 26-27) in Hilton Head, SC.
  • The Vikings have won four straight League titles and eight of the last 12 and were picked second in this year's preseason poll.
  • CSU returns four of the five players who helped the team to the League title last year, including junior Anton Krecic who was the medalist.

WOMEN'S GOLF

  • The Vikings resume the spring schedule at the Babs Steffens Hatter Collegiate in Florida from March 24-26.
  • CSU tied for 13th place at the Grand Canyon Invitational over the weekend. Senior Emily Turski carded a final round 74 and was CSU's top finisher, tying for 47th place overall.

MEN'S LACROSSE

  • Cleveland State will conclude a four-game road trip this Saturday, March 3, at Canisius.
  • The Vikings split a pair of games this past weekend in Colorado.
  • CSU stunned preseason Southern Conference favorite Air Force, 8-7, on Friday to garner its first ever road win over a Division I opponent.
  • The Vikings then fell to No. 5 Denver, 17-8, on Sunday in their second game of the weekend.

MEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING

  • Cleveland State placed second at the Horizon League Championships with 665.5 points, its highest point total since 2013.
  • The Vikings won the 800 freestyle relay in a new school record 6:32.96.
  • Junior Jared Stergar posted three individual runner-up finishes, all of which were in NCAA 'B' qualifying standards.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING

  • Cleveland State finished in third at the Horizon League Championships with 586 points, just seven points out of second. It was their highest placing and point total since 2013.
  • Junior Molly McNamara was named Women's Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Year, the first Viking to earn the honor since 2005.
  • She won two individual events, broke three individual school records and helped two relay teams break school records.
  • Paul Graham was named Women's Coach of the Year.

MEN'S TENNIS

  • The Vikings (8-5) will continue their six-match roadswing this week, traveling to Xavier on Friday, March 2 for their lone matchup of the week.
  • Last time out, Cleveland State split its matches at St. Bonaventure (W, 7-0) and Buffalo (L, 7-0).
  • With a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles against St. Bonaventure, junior Benjamin Slade became the 13th Viking all-time to notch 50 career singles wins.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

  • Cleveland State (4-7) will have the week off from competition, returning to the courts on Tuesday, March 6 when the Vikings host Akron at 3:00 p.m.
  • Last weekend, the Vikings extended their winstreak to three straight, as they picked up a 7-0 sweep at St. Bonaventure.
  • Aleksandra Golawska moved into ninth place on the CSU Singles Wins List with 62 career wins, while Golawska and Isabella Spindler joined Gaby Schoenberg in the double-digit win club for the year.

WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD

  • Cleveland State wrapped up its indoor season at the 2018 Horizon League Championship last week, recording four podium finishes and multiple personal and school records.
  • Hannah Gaskins recorded the Vikings' highest finish on the weekend, placing fifth in the pentathlon with a program-record 3,107 points.
  • The Vikings will begin their seven-meet outdoor season next month, opening with the William & Mary Tribe Invitational (Friday, March 16 - Saturday, March 17).

WRESTLING

  • Cleveland State will contest the Eastern Wrestling League Championships this Saturday, March 3, at Edinboro.
  • The Vikings were off last week as the team gears up for the upcoming week's conference tournament.
  • The EWL was awarded four automatic qualifying spots at 141 pounds and two spots each at 125, 157, 165, 184 and 285 pounds.

VIKING OF THE WEEK

Molly McNamara | Jr. | Women's Swimming

McNamara was named the Horizon League Women's Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Year after winning the 100 and 200 butterfly with school record times. She also finished third in the 200 IM with a school record time and also helped the 400 medley relay squad to a runner-up finish and a school record time. McNamara is the first CSU women's swimmer to earn the award since 2005 as she helped the Vikings to a third place finish.

Was named the Horizon League Coach of the Year, becoming the first CSU coach to earn the honor on the women's side.

Stefan Kenic | Fr. | Men's Basketball
Scored 17 points on Saturday in win at Youngstown State, including a three-pointer with six seconds left to force double overtime.

Nate Menendez | So. | Men's Lacrosse
Posted a hat trick with three goals on Sunday at #4/5 Denver.

Sarah Mok | Sr. | Women's Fencing
Placed ninth in the foil at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships.

Benjamin Slade | Jr. | Men's Tennis
Recorded his 50th career singles win at St. Bonaventure, picking up a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot.

Emily Turski | Sr. | Women's Golf
