CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State men's golf, women's cross country, women's tennis and women's track teams all received public recognition today by the NCAA for their latest multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores, posting multiyear APRs in the top-10 percent of their respective sport.
The APR, which annually recognized outstanding performances in the classroom, is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally.
CSU's four teams were tied for the most among Horizon League schools with Valparaiso.
Joe Jaketic's cross country team has been recognized for the 11th straight year, making his team one of 110 teams in the country to earn the Public Recognition Award in each of the 11 years of the program.
This marks the first time that Steve Weir's men's golf program has earned the award and the fifth straight year and sixth time overall for Brian Etzkin's women's tennis team being honored.
The awards are presented each year to teams finishing among the top-10 percent of their respective sport based on the most recent multi-year APR. The calculation of APR tracks the academic progress of each student-athlete and includes eligibility, retention and graduation. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years.
The 1,071 teams publicly recognized for high achievement represent 649 women's teams and 422 men's or mixed squads. This year, schools combined the indoor and outdoor track and field teams into one team score, which slightly reduced the overall number of teams earning Public Recognition Awards.
The scores required to be in the top-10 ranged from 983 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport. This year, 944 teams earned public recognition with a perfect APR score.
